Nowadays Barcelona is one of the most important cities in Europe for doing business and creating companies, and is a pole of attraction for local and foreign entrepreneurship. In the words of the Financial Times, “Catalonia is the best investment region in southern Europe.”

There are many reasons why. We highlight 7 of them:

1-       Strategic geographic location. The capital of Catalonia is located at a strategic geographical point, on the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula, at the gates of Spain, a stone’s throw from Africa and the rest of Europe. This has led to Barcelona becoming an important economic engine and strategic city for the traffic of people and goods. With three internationals airports, Catalonia is effectively connected to all 5 continents. This connections enable the access to 309 million consumers  less than two hours flight time from Barcelona.

In addition, the Port of Barcelona is one of the main ports in the Mediterranean and Southern Europe.

2-      Wealth. Last year Catalonia was the Spanish region with the highest GDP of the whole country: 231,277 million euros.

3-      Entrepreneurship. Catalonia is a continuous business generator. In fact, 20% of the companies created in Spain are set up in Catalonia.

Ninety percent of the foreign companies in Catalonia are in the Barcelona area. These companies are mainly Japanese, Italian, North American, French, Austrian and Swiss.

4-      Extensive network of suppliers, cost reduction. More than 35,000 flexible, customer-oriented manufacturing companies operate in Catalonia, making Catalonia an ideal place for industrial and service companies. This results in a wide range of goods at very low prices, also ensuring the efficiency of Catalan production.

5-      Attraction of talent. The region has more than 725 educational centers and 12 high quality universities. Barcelona has two of the most prestigious business schools in the world, IESE and ESADE.

6-      Quality of life. According to a study by Cushman & Wakefield Healey & Baker, Barcelona has been the best city in the world to live in since 1996. Catalonia’s geography is rich and varied: hundreds of kilometres of sunny beaches along the Mediterranean coast, 53 golf courses, 11 alpine ski resorts and 11 cross-country ski resorts, 14 spas, 16 national parks, 29 marinas, 7 water parks and more.

7-      Booming sectors. The economic sectors linked to new technologies and sustainability have grown spectacularly in recent years, offering attractive business and investment opportunities.

However, like any other country in the world, Spain has particularities you should know before investing in it. You can find them in this article.
